The Czech Marusarzówna Memorial ( Polish Memoriał Bronisława Czecha i Heleny Marusarzówny ; often also the Czech Marusarz Memorial ) was a series of competitions in Nordic skiing and Alpine Combination held between 1946 and 1994 in Zakopane, Poland , in memory of former skiers and resistance fighters Bronisław Czech and Helena Marusarzówna was held. The format was launched in 1946 on the initiative of activists from the Zakopan winter sports club SNPTT-1907. Among them was Stanisław Marusarz, a brother of the murdered. In the first few years, the winner of the initially national event was determined from the sum of the points scored in giant slalom, ski jumping, cross-country skiing and downhill skiing. For women, the results of the slalom and downhill race were included in the overall ranking. From 1952 onwards, no overall winner was determined, so instead winners in the Alpine and Nordic Combined were chosen. In addition, in 1952, in addition to the Alpine Combination, 10 km cross-country skiing was added for women, while the program for men was expanded to include 30 km cross-country skiing in 1955. From 1953 the commemorative competition was also open to international athletes and became one of the most important sporting events within the framework of the FIS . As such, the memorial also gained great popularity among top athletes. In 1956, for example, of around 250 athletes, over 100 came from abroad, including athletes from Austria, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Finland, France, Yugoslavia, the GDR, the Federal Republic as well as from Romania, Switzerland, Sweden, Hungary and Italy. For example, over 200 skiers from eleven countries took part in the 1971 Czech Marusarz Memorial. Olympic champions such as Helmut Recknagel , Hans-Georg Aschenbach or Paavo Lonkila were able to enter the winners' lists. The competitions lasted several days and mostly took place in March. Until the 1980s, the memorial was the largest ski event organized in Poland in the post-war period. Its importance decreased with the establishment of the World Cup format in the various disciplines and as a result of the August strike in 1980 .

For several years now, the Tatra Ski Association has been holding Czech Marusarzówna memorial competitions in alpine disciplines again.

Namesake

Bronisław Czech was born on July 25, 1908 in Zakopane. He was one of the most diverse and best skiers in the 1920s and 1930s. He took part in the Winter Olympics in St. Moritz , Lake Placid and Garmisch-Partenkirchen . In addition to skiing, the multiple Polish champion also practiced sailing, athletics and mountaineering. After the German invasion of Poland in 1939, Czech joined a resistance group and smuggled people and important documents into Hungary via the Tatra Mountains . His former Austrian trainer betrayed him, so that on May 14, 1940 he was imprisoned as a member of the Polish Home Army , tortured in the Hotel Palace and one of the first prisoners to be deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp . When he turned down the Nazi offer to train German skiers, he was assigned the hardest work in the camp. He died on June 5, 1944 in the Auschwitz I camp at the age of 35.

Helena Marusarzówna was born in Zakopane on January 17, 1918. From 1936 to 1939 she was the best Polish ski racer. She won the Polish championships seven times in the alpine disciplines of downhill, slalom and combined. During the Second World War Marusarzówna was a courier . She led several dozen people through the Tatras in Slovakia to Hungary and transferred some materials. She was arrested on March 25, 1940 and taken to prisons in Preszów , Muszyna , Nowy Sącz and Tarnów , among others . On September 12, 1941, she was shot by a German in Pogórska Wola near Tarnów.

1The ski jumping competition was initially held as a memorial in honor of Bronisław Czech .
2A second source speaks of a competition held on March 12th, which Kula is said to have won ahead of Jan Gąsienica Ciaptak and Jakub Węgrzynkiewicz .
3 Over 50 ski jumpers from eight nations took part in the competition.
4thThe winner was determined over four evaluation runs, which were split over two days. After the first day, Koba led Zakadze , while Nikolai Shamov was the best athlete on the second day.
5In addition, a team competition took place in 1973, which Poland (with Tadeusz Pawlusiak, among others ) won in front of the GDR mission.
6thIn addition, a team competition took place in 1974, which won the GDR selection before Poland and Czechoslovakia. Henry Glaß , Hans-Georg Aschenbach and Rainer Schmidt started for the GDR .
7thThe linked individual verification is incorrectly based on Bernd Eckstein as the runner-up in the Średnia Krokiew competition , but Neue Zeit and Neues Deutschland clearly write from Jürgen.
8thThere are different lists of results, so that Józef Pawlusiak may have achieved third place ahead of Falko Weißpflog and Walter Schwabl from Wielka Krokiew . The Berliner Zeitung reports on this .
9 55 ski jumpers took part in the competition.
1070 ski jumpers took part in the competition, which was attended by around 40,000 spectators. It is unclear whether the World Cup competition was held as part of the Czech Marusarz Memorial.

Further winners in Nordic skiing

Until 1951, the respective disciplines were part of the overall ranking, so that, for example, it was not until 1953 that the men's 15 km cross-country skiing was added to the program as an open competition. In addition, relay races were held regularly. The following list gives an overview of the winners in Nordic combined and cross-country skiing. The research has not yet been able to determine all of the winners.
