Lustenberger, who started for SC Marbach , celebrated his first international success with the start at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck . At just 23 years of age, he was the only Swiss combiner at the Games. In the individual combination, he reached place 10 after a good jumping and a mixed cross-country skiing at the end of 19th place.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1978 , he started in the team with the special jumpers. Together with Walter Steiner , Hansjörg Sumi and Robert Mösching , he reached seventh place and 43rd place in the individual on the large hill.

At the Holmenkollen Ski Festival 1979 Lustenberger won the individual Nordic Combined competition for the first time . This also secured the starting place for the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid . There he competed in ski jumping and in combination. In the ski jumping singles he finished 30th after jumps on 98 and 95 meters. In the individual combination he was able to increase his jumping performance again. After round two he was temporarily in third place before finishing the jumping in sixth. After he achieved a good result in cross-country skiing with 14th place, he was in the end on the sixth individual overall place.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo in 1982 , he started again in the team in the combined races. With the team he reached sixth place. The now 29-year-old did not start in the special jumpers.

After the end of his active career, Lustenberger became a technical delegate at the FIS and the FISU . He is an honorary member of the Lucerne Snow Sports Association. As early as 1983 he published his thesis under the title Nordic Combination: A survey about the structure of training in the preparatory period .
