Jan Szpunar (born October 30, 1952 in Kościelisko ; † March 17, 2017 ) was a Polish biathlete who successfully competed internationally in the mid-1970s.

Life

Jan Szpunar was active for Legia Zakopane. He had his first successes as a junior. At the Junior World Championships in Linthal in 1972 , he won the gold medal in the relay race against the Soviet Union and the GDR on the side of Stanisław Karpiel and Ludwik Zięba . At the Junior World Championships in 1973 he repeated this success with Stanislaw Obrochta and Ludwig Zięba in Lake Placid before Finland and the Soviet Union. He was also Junior World Champion in singles ahead of Frank Pötter and Obrochta.

In 1975 Szpunar took part in the biathlon world championships for the first time in Antholz and won the bronze medal as a starting runner with Andrzej Rapacz , Ludwik Zięba and Wojciech Truchan in the relay race behind Finland and the Soviet Union. In the individual he was 24th, in the sprint 16. A year later he was at the Olympic Games in Innsbruck 19th of the individual and with Andrzej Rapacz, Ludwik Zięba and Wojciech Truchan in the relay race 12th In the last non-Olympic sprint, the world championship was held, Szpunar finished 13th. Nationally, Szpunar won the individual title in 1974.
