History and structure

The forerunner of today RSV Cologne was on March 1, 1951 as the first supplement department of the primary in the athletics active ASV Köln founded by Egon Paul Mann, Peter P. Sures and Joseph H. Fischenich. The contact to British military teams from the Cologne area and other rugby clubs from Belgium also had a supportive effect on the establishment of the first men's team . In 1953 they finally took part in the German Rugby Championship for the first time.

In 1971 the first participation in the newly created German Rugby League took place . Since 2004, the home games of the Cologne Crusaders have been played in the rugby park in Cologne in the Klettenberg district on the left bank of the Rhine . The site is one of the largest of its kind in North Rhine-Westphalia .

Since 1953, several teams from Cologne have been integrated into the games of the German Rugby Association without interruption . There are currently several men's teams as well as one women's team in 15 and 7 rugby, several youth and children's teams and a senior team. In 2013, Germany's second gay rugby team, the Cologne Crushers , was integrated into the game operations and the club structure. Both homosexual and heterosexual men can play with this team, which is primarily geared towards popular sports.

The first men's team was relegated from the 1st Rugby Bundesliga to the 2nd Rugby Bundesliga in the 2015/16 season . The first women's team currently plays in the 1st rugby Bundesliga and the German 7th Bundesliga. In 2005 she became German champion in Olympic 7-a-side rugby for the first time, and in 2014 she won the title again. In 2008 she again succeeded in winning the German championship in the unofficial 10-a-side rugby.

After 66 years, after intensive discussions, the ASV Köln was amicably separated and has been listed in the association register as an independent association since January 1, 2018. At the turn of the year 2017/18, the transfer of gaming licenses confirmed that the new RSV Köln, instead of ASV Köln, would be able to participate in the games of the German Rugby Association.

In 2019, the first women’s team in the 1st Rugby Bundesliga celebrated their first victory in the German championship in classic 15-a-side rugby.
