Noah Lyles (born July 18, 1997 in Gainesville , Florida ) is an American sprinter .
Athletic career
At the age of 15 he took part in the USATF Junior Olympics 2012 in Baltimore and took second place in the final over 200 meters with 21.82 s.
In the spring of 2013, he ran the 100-meter distance in under 11 seconds for the first time, and improved over 200 meters to 21.26 s. In the US eliminations he was able to qualify as third in the final over 200 meters for the Youth World Championships in Donetsk . There he reached the semifinals. With the US team, he won the silver medal in the sprint relay (100 m - 200 m - 300 m - 400 m) as a 200-meter runner.
In 2014 he continued to improve over 100 meters to 10.45 s, and over half the stadium lap he once again qualified for international competitions. At the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing he won the gold medal in 20.80 s after he had set a new personal best in the semifinals with 20.71 s.
The following year he succeeded in the US Junior Championships in Eugene, the double success over 100 and 200 meters. With 10.14 s and 20.18 s, he was able to call up his full potential in the final. This also guaranteed him a start at the Pan American Junior Games in Edmonton in the same year. There he narrowly missed the double, in the 100-meter run he had to admit defeat to Cuban Reynier Mena by a hundredth of a second with 10.18 seconds . Over 200 meters, however, he was able to refer Mena to silver.
In 2016 he triumphed again at the national junior championships. This time he did without a double start, with 10.08 s (+2.2 m / s wind) he won the 100 meter final. Just a weekend later, he took part in the US eliminations for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . While he did not go beyond the 100-meter run with 10.16 s, he managed to reach the finals halfway through the stadium, where he improved the 31-year-old high school record with a new high of 20.09 s reached fourth place and thus only just missed bronze and qualification for the Olympics. At the end of the season he competed over 100 meters and with the 4 x 100 meter relay of the USA at the U20 World Championships in Bydgoszcz . In 10.17 s he won the gold medal in front of the Italian Filippo Tortu and he also won the relay.
In July 2016 he signed a professional contract with Adidas and decided against the usual college career. He and his younger brother Josephus, who was also signed by Adidas, rejected the plan to run for the Florida Gators , the team at the University of Florida where he began his studies.
In addition to the sprint disciplines, he also occasionally competed in the high jump until 2015, where he achieved a personal best of 2.03 m.
Professional career
He won his first professional title at the 2017 National Indoor Championships in Albuquerque. In the less often run 300-meter distance, he won in 31.87 s, the fastest time ever run in the hall over this distance. On April 15, 2017, it ran under 10 seconds for the first time in Clermont. The time of 9.95 s could not be recognized as a personal best because of the strong tail wind (+4.3 m / s). At the IAAF World Relays 2017 , he competed for the USA's adult team for the first time. With the 4 x 200 meter relay, he won the silver medal behind Canada. He completed his first race in the Diamond League on May 13, 2017 in Shanghai . He ran under 20 seconds for the first time with 19.90 seconds and won ahead of LaShawn Merritt . Because of a thigh injury, he decided not to take part in the 200-meter semi-finals at the US championships in June and therefore did not start at the World Championships in London . He only made his comeback at the final of the Diamond League in Brussels on September 1st. He crossed the finish line after 20.00 s ahead of Ameer Webb and Ramil Guliyev and won the US $ 50,000 prize money.

In the 2018 indoor season, it increased to 6.57 seconds over the 60 meter distance. At the national indoor championships he did not get past the semi-finals in this discipline. In May he had two 200-meter victories in the Diamond League: In Doha he won a new personal best of 19.83 s, which he improved to 19.69 s in Eugene . On June 9, he stayed in Kingston with 9.93 s for the first time with a legal tailwind under 10 seconds. At the US championships, he did without a double start and concentrated on the 100 meters. With runs under 10 seconds in all three rounds and an increase to 9.88 s in the final, he became the youngest US champion over 100 meters in 34 years and set a world record for the year in the meantime. This was followed by two third places over 100 meters in the Diamond League in Rabat and Birmingham , as well as two victories over 200 meters in Lausanne and Monaco , where he set a new personal best of 19.65 seconds. As a favorite, he traveled to the 200-meter final of the Diamond League in Zurich on August 30th . He lived up to this role when he won in 19.67 s in front of European champion Ramil Guliyev and, as in 2017, secured victory in the overall standings. With this run he was also the only sprinter other than Usain Bolt 2009 to stay under 19.7 seconds four times in one season. At the end of the season he competed for the Americas team at the 2018 Continental Cup in Ostrava . In the 100 meter final he won in 10.01 s ahead of Su Bingtian and Akani Simbine . He won a second gold medal with the 4 x 100 meter relay with the cast Mike Rodgers , Lyles, Yohan Blake and Tyquendo Tracey in 38.05 s.
At the IAAF World Relays 2019 , he won the silver medal together with Mike Rodgers, Justin Gatlin and Isiah Young as the final runner in the US 4 x 100 meter relay . His first international individual start of the season took place on May 18 in Shanghai over 100 meters, where he caught up with the 60-meter world record holder Christian Coleman in the final meters, finally finishing a wafer thin before Coleman and setting a new personal best with 9.86 seconds put up. He experienced his first defeat as a professional in an outdoor 200-meter race on June 6th in Rome : At 19.72 seconds, he was two hundredths of a second slower than fellow compatriot Michael Norman, who was also 21 . One month later, he ran 19.50 s over 200 meters in Lausanne , making him the fourth fastest sprinter over this distance.
