The Network Aging Research / Network Aging Research (NAR) of the Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg is a research network dedicated to research on aging in the Rhine-Neckar region . The NAR was founded on June 1, 2006 and officially began its activities with its launch event on July 19, 2007. It succeeds the German Center for Aging Research (DZFA), which had to be closed on December 31, 2005 due to a lack of funding from the federal and state governments.

Cooperation partner

To set up the Aging Research Network , a cooperation agreement was concluded between the following institutions: The Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg with its two medical faculties Mannheim and Heidelberg, the German Cancer Research Center Heidelberg DKFZ, the University of Mannheim and the Central Institute for Mental Health ZI, Mannheim.

The institutional goal of the NAR is to network the existing activities in the field of aging research more closely with each other and across disciplines and to expand them because of their high social importance. The NAR is a permanent research association that - apart from the professorships and equipment brought in by the respective cooperation partner - is mainly funded from third-party funds.

organization

Building of the NAR

The Aging Research Network is managed by the Board of Directors, which is composed of the speakers from the research areas.

To coordinate the concerns of the cooperation partners and to coordinate strategic and fundamentally financial questions, a steering committee has been set up consisting of the following members:

  • the Vice Rector for Research at Heidelberg University
  • the deans of the two medical faculties of Heidelberg University
  • a Vice Rector of the University of Mannheim
  • the Scientific Board of the DKFZ
  • the director of the ZI Mannheim
  • the director of the ZMBH
  • the director of the NAR.

The Scientific Advisory Board evaluates the scientific development of the NAR every two years. It consists of five members, one member should come from the fields of politics, business or society. Anyone who has “outstanding scientific qualifications in the field of aging research” or in science management and is not a member of the NAR or one of the cooperation partners can become a member of the advisory board.

Research priorities

In the Aging Research Network , the humanities, natural scientists and physicians conduct an interdisciplinary study of the aspects of aging, as aging affects people as a whole.

The Heidelberg physician and clinic director Ludolf Krehl (1861–1937) - the founder of somatic medicine - asked about a hundred years ago to treat sick people as a whole personality with body, mind and soul. For us, his view of diseases is both a warning and a challenge: “There are no diseases as such, we only know sick people”.

With its holistic, systemic approach and its interdisciplinarity, the NAR is unique in Germany. Interdisciplinarity in the breadth and depth necessary for aging research requires new ways of knowledge transfer that ensure a connection between the subjects, but also between theory and practice.

Currently, the work in the NAR is focused on four main areas:

  • Research in all areas represented in the network
  • Dialogue beyond the boundaries of the disciplines
  • Promotion of young talent
  • public relation

The aim of the NAR is to research the various aspects of aging across disciplines and to achieve a leading position in Germany and Europe. The Aging Research Network is funded by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts .

NAR College

In order to achieve the necessary connection between “disciplinary depth” and “interdisciplinary breadth”, the NAR-Kolleg zu Heidelberg was founded. The NAR-Kolleg is financed by the Klaus Tschira Foundation .

Research Training Group Dementia

Twelve doctoral scholarships from various disciplines on the subject of "dementia". The postgraduate program is funded by the Robert Bosch Foundation .
