André-Jean Festugière

André-Jean Festugière (born March 15, 1898 in Paris , † August 13, 1982 in Saint-Dizier ) was a French religious historian and classical philologist .

Life

Festugière completed his high school studies during the First World War in Paris, attended there from 1918 to the École normal supérieure and was a member of the École Francaise in Rome and Athens from 1920 to 1922 . In 1924 he entered the Dominican Order and was ordained a priest in 1930. He then spent a year in Jerusalem and received his doctorate in 1937 at the Sorbonne as Docteur ès lettres. From 1940 he began teaching at the Institut Catholique in Paris and from 1943 as Directeur d'études at the École pratique des hautes études in Paris until 1968. His teaching position was the history of Greek religions in the Hellenistic and Roman epochs. In 1970 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Festugière was a prolific scholar and relentless worker in science, who produced over 70 books and 175 essays, including on Socrates , Plato , Epicurus , Proclus, and the Corpus Hermeticum . The four-volume work La Révélation d ' Hermès Trismègiste was a supplement to the four-volume Corpus Hermeticum . For his scientific achievements, Festugiere was accepted on June 28, 1963 as a foreign member of the order Pour le Mérite for science and the arts . Since 1952 he was a corresponding member of the British Academy and since 1961 of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .
