The Lyondell Chemical Company was a major, global chemical company headquartered in Houston, Texas, which was listed on the New York Stock Exchange until the end of December 2007 until it was taken over by Basell . It is now part of Lyondellbasell Industries NV

history

In 1985 Lyondell emerged from the Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO) . In 2005, sales of around US $ 24 billion (2005) were achieved.

In December 2007, Lyondell was taken over by the Dutch chemical company Basell for $ 19 billion.

The chemical company LyondellBasell is majority owned by the Access Industries holding company owned by the Russian-born US billionaire Leonard Blavatnik .

The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in early January 2009 due to debts of $ 26 billion .
