Bernd Loebe (born December 15, 1952 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German opera director .

Life

After graduating from high school, Loebe studied law at the University of Frankfurt , and also piano out of private interest . From 1975 to 1980 he worked in the music department of the FAZ as well as for the Neue Musikzeitung and the magazine Opernwelt . At the same time he worked as a freelancer for the Hessischer Rundfunk . Loebe presented u. a. the hr2 early broadcast Before everyday life and was responsible for the biographical lexicon of voices . In several seasons Loebe introduced world-famous, locally important or forgotten opera stars alphabetically in interviews and in sound recordings.

In 1979 he switched to the editing of the HR music department, where he eventually took over the opera editing and was responsible for reporting on the Bayreuth Festival , Salzburg Festival and other international music festivals.

In November 1990 the Brussels Opera appointed La Monnaie Loebe as artistic director. Since September 2000 he has worked as a consultant at the Frankfurt Opera , which appointed him artistic director for the 2002/2003 season. In November 2005, the Frankfurt magistrate extended his contract for the years 2008 to 2013. After an extension of his contract in September 2009 to 2015, a renewed extension to 2023 followed in May 2014.

Loebe took over the Frankfurt Opera in a time of declining budgets and performance numbers. Since then he has made particular efforts to build up a high-performance ensemble and an extensive repertoire. At least eight to nine new productions were staged annually, e.g. Sometimes in co-production with other companies or as a takeover of existing productions. In the 2006/2007 season, around 300 events were held by the Frankfurt Opera, including 182 performances in the large house; In 2013/2014 there were 190 performances in the big house.

In its first season, the Frankfurt Opera received the title of Opera House of the Year for the second time since 1995 by the critics of the opera world . In 2015, the Opernwelt named Oper Frankfurt for the second time in Loebe's tenure as Opera House of the Year. For the 2014/2015 season, the Frankfurt Opera was once again awarded by the Deutsche Bühne magazine for the best overall theater program.

Since March 2009 he has held the position of Vice President of the German Academy of Performing Arts . In June 2010 he was elected chairman of the German Opera Conference. As such, supported by his colleagues, he turned in open letters against dubious tendencies in international cultural policy, such as the censorship of a Nureyev ballet in 2017 at the Moscow Bolshoi Theater or the dismissal of the director of the Oslo Opera , Per Boye Hansen , a " decision completely remote from culture ”.

In October 2018, Loebe was presented as the successor to Gustav Kuhn as artistic director of the Tyrolean Festival Erl ; he is to take over the management from September 1, 2019 alongside the artistic director of the Frankfurt Opera.
