Spirit Lake is located on the west bank of East Okoboji Lake in the middle of the Iowa Great Lakes region in northwestern Iowa. The state line to Minnesota is about 6 miles north of the city, with South Dakota starting 122 km to the west.
Spirit Lake is located at 43 ° 25'23 "north latitude and 95 ° 6'15" west longitude and extends over an area of 8.7 km². The urban area is mostly in the Center Grove Township , but also extends to smaller parts in the Spirit Lake and the Lakeville Township .
