Gerhard Drees (engineer)

Gerhard Drees (born August 6, 1925 in Isenhagen-Hankensbüttel ; † March 22, 2015 in Stuttgart ) was a German civil engineer , university professor and entrepreneur. He was a professor at the University of Stuttgart for many years and co-founded the consulting company Drees & Sommer .

Life

Studies and career beginnings

During the Second World War, Drees served in the Wehrmacht from 1943 and was captured. After his return from captivity, he began to study construction at the Technical University of Hanover in 1948 , which he completed in 1953 with the academic degree of graduate engineer . He received a research grant at the Institute for Construction Machinery and Construction Operations at RWTH Aachen University under Georg Garbotz and received his doctorate in 1956. He then worked as a construction consultant in Belgium and Spain until 1958 , subsequently as an employee and from 1960 to 1963 as a member of the management of the Düsseldorf construction company Carl Brandt.

Scientists and university professors

In 1963 Drees was appointed to the chair for construction management at the Stuttgart Technical University. In 1964 he founded the Institute for Construction Management, which deals with the issues of economic efficiency and project management in the construction industry, and became its director. Drees contributed to the development of the structure of construction costs that is still valid in Germany today and his manual Calculation of Construction Prices, which is published ten times, is considered a standard work. Drees published over a hundred scientific papers, some of which were translated into English , Polish and Norwegian . Professor Drees was the supervisor of 39 dissertations . He retired in 1993, but he headed the institute until 1994, when Fritz Berner was his successor. Drees also worked scientifically as an emeritus.

On October 13, 2000, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen .

Consultant and entrepreneur

In 1970 Gerhard Drees and Volker Kuhne founded the engineering office Drees, Kuhne u. Partner who specialized in network planning , production planning , business organization and construction consulting. In 1973 Hans Sommer became a partner, and the office soon took on the name Drees & Sommer . After constant growth, expansion of the service portfolio and the opening of several branches, Drees & Sommer was converted into a stock corporation in 1991 and Gerhard Drees became Chairman of the Supervisory Board. He held this position until the beginning of 2008, but continued to be a co-owner of the group afterwards.

From 1999 to 2001 Drees was a consultant to the Federal Ministry of Education and Research .

Private life

Gerhard Drees was married to Jutta Drees. Gerhard and Jutta Drees have 4 children and 8 grandchildren. His eldest daughter Verena is an architect with the city of Hamburg, his daughter Alexa is Senior Consultant Training and Projects at Siemens in Munich, his son Joachim Drees was a member of the board of Drees & Sommer AG and became a board member of MAN Truck & Bus AG and in 2015 the chairman of the board of MAN SE and his youngest son Philipp is professor for orthopedics at the Mainz University Medical Center.
