The hamlet of Badl is 420  m above sea level. A. , at the confluence of the Badlbach into the Mur , to the left of the river, where the Mur leaves the Frohnleitener Basin and its breakthrough valley flows through to the wide valley at Peggau- Deutschfeistritz . To the north, towards Frohnleiten and already in the wide valley floor, lies the Frohnleitner village as Rotte .

In both municipalities, the place comprises almost 20 houses with around 60 inhabitants, most of them in Frohnleiten. The houses on the slope above ( single location Bucher ) also belong to the village in this municipality .

The breakthrough of the Mur separates the western Graz mountains and the eastern Graz mountains . The Parmaseggkogel  ( 785  m above sea level ), an extension of the ridge from the Sadningkogel , which separates the Murtal and Übelbachtal , lies to the west of Badl ; the Kugelstein is right next to the village . East of the Mur are the Bloderkogel  ( 816  m above sea level ), a foothill of the Tanneben south and Lammkogel  ( 759  m above sea level ) north of the Badlgraben, where the high places Pfannberg and Schönegg are located.

History and sights

The small town has a number of sights that document its location as a place of traffic since ancient times:

In Badlgraben there are two important caves, the Badlhöhle and the Repolusthöhle , both sites of early settlement, the second is the oldest known site in Austria with 300,000 year old traces of fire. In the valley follows the Semriacher Lurgrotte , which is not as impressive as the (Peggauer) Lurgrotte , the largest active water cave in Austria - the Semriacher Höhle is the entrance cave of the Lurbach , which emerges again at Peggau. Against Peggau out is still the Ibex cave . The area rich in karst caves does not belong to the limestone Alps, but to the Schöckl limestone of the much older Graz Paleozoic , which was raised with the crystalline central Alps. The nature reserve Peggauer Wand – Lurgrotte  ( LSG 42 ) begins above the Badlhöhle .

On the right side of the Mur in the village of Adriach is the listed Roman bridge and a few hundred meters of Altweg (Römerwegsee list of monuments ). Both the bridge and the route are actually Roman, date to the 2nd to 3rd centuries AD and were part of the important trade route from Flavia Solva northwards.
Towards Peggau, already at Mautbichl , there is the medieval Badl defense system ( tower hillsee list of monuments ), the guard of the Badler narrow valley.

The northern tunnel portal ( see list of monuments ) of the Mur transfer tunnel to the Peggau-Deutschfeistritz power plant , an industrial monument of the 1900s, is also located near the Roman bridge .

The most important monument is the 360-meter-long Badlwandgalerie of the Austrian Southern Railway Vienna - Trieste from 1845. When the railway was moved to other banks in 1966, it served as a gallery for the federal road. It has been locked since 1978 and largely collapsed.
The Ferdinand memorial chapel is located near Badl , built on the occasion of the construction of the railway - 41 workers were killed while building the gallery.

Transport and tourism

Badl is located directly on the main road Graz - Bruck an der Mur , the B 335 Brucker Ersatzstraße , which was part of the notorious guest worker route for decades . Since the completion of the Bruck expressway S 35, quiet has largely returned. The place has its own junction with the expressway, which is also used as the access to Peggau-Nord.

The most important tourist attraction is the Murhof golf course on the right bank of the Mur.

A hiking trail leads from the village through the Badlgraben past the caves to Pöllau and Schönegg, where the entire easy hiking area of the Graz mountains up to Hochtrötsch ( 1239  m ) can be reached. This path is part of the Grazer Umland-Weg  (GUW), which crosses the Mur at Badl and leads northwards as a high path above the Übelbachtal. A side route leads down the Mur to Deutschfeistritz, which is reached at Feistritzer Kirchberg .
