Geography and geology

The Kirchberg is part of a region known as Central Styria or “Land vor dem Gebirge” and belongs geologically to the Graz Palaeozoic . It consists of Schöcklkalk and is in front of the Übelbachtal . The mountain is a fall- back crest that descends steeply on three sides and is connected to the Kugelstein in the northwest by a saddle . The municipality of Deutschfeistritz extends directly at the foot of the mountain, which lies partly on the alluvial floor of the Mur and partly on low-lying terraces made of clay and gravel from the Worms- Age.

History and development

Although the area has not yet been archaeologically examined, due to the strategically favorable location and the findings from the surrounding area, one can assume that there was a castle at the highest point of the Kirchberg from the 8th or 9th to the 12th century . The Gothic parish church of Deutschfeistritz, first mentioned in 1297, and the former cemetery surrounding it were built in its place.

On the southern slope of the mountain there are several artificially created terraces that indicate early viticulture. Today there is a baroque Calvary on this side with three station chapels, a crucifixion group and a Mount of Olives chapel.

An archaeological excavation took place on the western slope near the King's Cave in 1949, during which the remains of an early medieval building, probably an iron forge, were uncovered.
