Hohenofen and Haselbach form a district of the city of Sonneberg in the district of Sonneberg in Thuringia .

location

The historic location of Hohenofen is north of Haselbach on a narrow spur facing south on the upper reaches of the Haselbach. The mountain valley, which narrows to the north, is located on the south side of the central Thuringian slate mountains . With the rapid expansion of the settlements and commercial areas as early as the 19th century, the districts merged. A section of the state road 2658 runs through the village today .

history

Blast furnace was first mentioned on August 13, 1678.

At the end of the 17th century, the heirs of the hammer mill owner Baumann in Friedrichsthal built a blast furnace for their works at the exit of the Toxiggrund. The small Hohenofen settlement was built around the blast furnace facility and, like the neighboring Vorwerk, belonged to the Graefenthal office . The Rögitz river in Toxiggrund formed a natural border at that time.

On March 17, 1827, Duke Bernhard von Sachsen-Meiningen granted District Administrator Müller permission to build a sheet glass works on the site of the former Baumann blast furnace, which was named “Marienthal” in honor of the Duchess and mother of the country. A particularly good and sought-after plate glass was produced in this glassworks. In 1849 Marienthal consisted of two residential buildings and a so-called Werkhaus. It housed 46 residents, mostly Bohemian sheet glass makers. Today only the “manor house” of the Marienglashütte is preserved. It houses a church service room that is used by the congregation in the winter months. A park with a play area and parking lot was created on the premises of the hut. In addition to making sheet glass, many of the town's residents also made their living from pen making.

Hohenofen had its own school building, which was built in 1849 and today belongs to a family of glassblowers. A scooter route was attached to the school building during the GDR era. Many girls and boys trained cross-country skiing there . Some managed to get to the sports schools in Thuringia.

The neighboring hamlet of Vorwerk was incorporated around 1800 . Hohenofen belonged to the district of Saalfeld and was incorporated into Haselbach (district of Sonneberg) on October 1, 1922 and then came with Haselbach on January 1, 1997 to the new municipality "Oberland am Rennsteig". As of December 31, 2013, this was again incorporated into Sonneberg .
