Steinbach is located southeast of the core town of Sonneberg in a natural environment. Neighboring districts to the west are Köppelsdorf and Malmerz . The state roads 2661 and 1150 open up the area for traffic.

The village was first mentioned in a document on July 12, 1292. On April 1, 1923 Steinbach was incorporated into Köppelsdorf.
