Matthias Bauer (* 1959 in Sonneberg ) is a German jazz and improvisation musician ( double bass , composition ).

Live and act

Matthias Bauer, younger brother of the jazz musicians Conny (* 1943) and Hannes (1954–2016), studied double bass at the “Hanns Eisler” University of Music in Berlin . In 1980 he left the GDR and lived in Lyon until 1988 , then in Cologne, and since 1991 in Berlin again. He played there in the 1990s with Robert Rutman 's Steel Cello Ensemble, Ulrich Gumpert ( Markowitz 'Blues 1995) and the Not Missing Drums Project ( Offline Adventures , with Joachim Gies, among others). He also worked on recordings for the September Band ( Virtual Cowws , with Hans Reichel , Rüdiger Carl ), Sven-Åke Johansson ( Six Little Pieces for Quintet , 1999), Bill Dixon ( Berlin Abbozzi (2000), with Klaus Koch / Tony Oxley ) With. With his two brothers and his nephew Louis Rastig he appeared as Bauer 4 (album Family Affairs , 2007). With Maria Lucchese he presented the duo album Alchimia Organica (Creative Sources) in 2014 .

In the field of contemporary music, Bauer also worked with Ensemble United Berlin , Ensemble Mosaik and with composers such as Georg Katzer , Helmut Zapf and Helmut Oehring , in whose productions such as Aschemond (Berlin State Opera) or SehnsuchtMeer at the Düsseldorf Opera he was involved. Furthermore he realized stage music and concepts for improvising musicians. According to Tom Lord , he was involved in 18 recording sessions in the field of jazz between 1992 and 2018, most recently with Evan Parker ( The Balderin Sali Variations ).
