Parodia schwebsiana is a species of Parodia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet schwebsiana honors the German cactus gardener Willy Schwebs (1876–1934) from near Dresden.

description

Parodia schwebsiana usually grows individually. The green depressed spherical to spherical shoots reach heights of growth of 2 to 12 centimeters and diameters of up to 8 centimeters. The tip of the shoot is densely woolly. The 13 to 20 low and straight ribs are weakly subdivided into humps. The areoles on them are initially heavily covered with wool and are hardly noticeable later. The one to four hooked central spines are reddish to light brown in color and have lengths of 1 to 2 centimeters. The lower one is directed downwards. The five to ten reddish or yellow radial spines turn gray with age and are 0.5 to 1.5 centimeters long.

The pink- purple to blood-red flowers reach lengths of 2 to 3 centimeters and diameters of 2 to 2.5 centimeters. Their woolly flower tube is constricted above the pericarpel and is covered with bristles there. The scars are light yellow. The hard-skinned, spherical fruits have a diameter of 0.3 to 0.4 centimeters and are covered with scales and white woolen hair. The fruits contain glossy black seeds 0.9 millimeters long and 0.6 millimeters wide, which are humped.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Parodia schwebsiana is common in the Bolivian department of Cochabamba at altitudes of 2300 to 2800 meters.

The first description as Echinocactus schwebsianus by Erich Werdermann was published in 1930. Curt Backeberg placed the species in the genus Parodia in 1936 . Another nomenclature synonym is Bolivicactus schwebsianus (Backeb.) Doweld (2000).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
