location

The castle is located in the cadastral community of Mauritzen, which belongs to Frohnleiten, at Mayr-Melnhof-Straße 32. It is surrounded by a large English park .

history

At the southern end of the village of Mauritzen there was already a fortification built by the Counts of Pfannberg in the 13th century , which was called "Grafenhof". Ulrich, the first representative of this family known by name, was named in 1280. At the beginning of the 14th century, the Grafenhof became a farm. This seems to have faded in the following years, as Veit Denkh zu Grafendorf began building a new farm in the 17th century. In 1645 the estate went to Wolf Freiherr von Jöchlinger, who linked it with his rule in Pfannberg. At that time the court was already a noble residence.

Neu-Pfannberg in 1825

Franz Anton Edler von Saffran bought the manor in 1736 and set up the manorial administration in Grafendorf, which was now called Neu-Pfannberg. In 1737 the courtyard was expanded into a castle by master mason Joseph Stainberger, and in 1804 today's castle garden was built on the site of the village of Mauritzen. From 1870 to 1872 the princes of Lobkowitz owned the castle. They were followed by the Mayr-Melnhof family in ownership. The castle was redesigned several times in the 19th and 20th centuries. In the spring of 1945 it was burned down by soldiers and then rebuilt. Today it is still owned by the Mayr-Melnhof-Saurau family.

description

The two-story castle was built by Joseph Stainberger in 1737. Its current design with the vaulted rooms is largely from the 19th century.

The Schlössl Ruhefeld, also known as Gut Ruhefeld, is located at the north-eastern approach to the castle park. This was built in 1780 by Johann Paul von Wildburg and modernized in 1970.

The late Gothic Karner of the former Mauritzen cemetery is located in the castle park . The Karner was built around 1500, has two floors and a hexagonal floor plan. The ossuary is located in the basement . This is covered by a fan vault with a round central support. The upper floor has a six-part vault. The three-lane pointed arch windows have rich tracery . The building is entered through an arched portal with a finial and lateral pinnacles . There is a porch with stairs in front of the portal. This has a parapet in which a Roman stone with three bust portraits from the time after AD 212 is walled in.

There is also a wayside shrine from the mid-18th century with a baroque stone statue of Johannes Nepomuk in the park.
