The Rabenstein Castle is a rock castle in the area of City Frohnleiten in the Styrian district Graz environment .
history
The castle was originally called Rammenstein and was named after Hartnid Schenk von Rammenstein , who had his seat on the complex from 1240 to 1276. The Altburg, which burned down at the end of the 15th century, was not rebuilt. The castle, which still stands today, was built in the 14th century and was owned by the rulers. Since the castle is located on a rock above the Mur , the Murtal could be closed and secured if necessary.
After changing fiefdoms, the Roman-German King Maximilian I lent Rabenstein Castle to the Harrach family in 1497 . The castle was in ruins at the time. It was rebuilt and sold by Lienhard von Harrach to Philipp von Breuner in 1543 . The other owners were the gentlemen von Windischgrätz . The facility was subsequently expanded.
After a few sales, Rabenstein Castle came into the possession of the Waldsteiners . During the 17th century, the Trauttmansdorff family carried out a generous baroque renovation , which was incorrectly assigned to the architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach . Then the castle went to the Wagensperger and the Lords of Dietrichstein .
After the castle was close to decay in the first half of the 19th century, it was restored by Ludwig von Montoyer at great expense. In 1887, Rabenstein became the property of the Reininghaus family .
After the Second World War , a guest house was built in the castle. The Liechtenstein family followed as further owners in 1981 , but after only a few years they sold it to the Styrian Electricity Company (STEG). The castle was mainly used for cultural events such as exhibitions, theater and concert performances.
The Rabenstein Mur power plant has been located below the castle since 1987 and is currently operated by Verbund .
In 2005 it was sold to the Graz entrepreneur Werner Hochegger , who carried out extensive renovation work until 2009 and built a modern extension.
