Johann Anton von Tillier (XIII.) (* January 1792 in Bern ; baptized on January 24, 1792; † February 16, 1854 in Munich ) was a Swiss historian and politician and came from the Bernese patrician family Tillier .

Life

Johann Anton von Tillier studied history and law from 1809 to 1811 at the University of Geneva and from 1811 to 1813 at the University of Jena . In Jena he joined the Corps Vandalia and took part in the liberal uprising there. After completing his studies, he joined the Bernese civil service. He owned the Bernese citizenship law and the corporate law on Middle Lions .

Tillier worked politically at the communal, cantonal and federal level. From 1829 to 1832 he was President of the City Police Commission and from 1831 City Councilor of Bern. He was a member of the Grand Council of the Canton of Bern from 1823 to 1850. In 1837 he was elected Mayor of Bern. In 1846/1847 and 1848/1849 he was President of the Cantonal Parliament. From 1824 to 1831 he was an appeal judge in Bern. In 1830 and 1841 he was a member of the Bern government council . From 1831 to 1832 he worked in the regeneration government . In 1836, 1841, 1846 and 1848 he was the ambassador of the Canton of Bern to the Diet . In 1848 he successfully ran in the first federal parliamentary elections and was a member of the Swiss National Council until 1851 . Here he advocated an amnesty for the Sonderbund . After his non-re-election in 1851, he went to Munich. In addition to his active political activities, he devoted himself to writing history independently. Annalistically , he described on the one hand the history of Bern from the Middle Ages to the end of the Ancien Régime and on the other hand the Swiss history from the Helvetic to the beginning of the federal state. He is considered the most important Bernese historian of the 19th century. As a historian, he emphasized the vicarious value of Bernese history for Swiss history.
