The Hagenberg software park ( SWP Hagenberg ) is a university ( Hagenberg campus ), research / technology and start-up center in the municipality of Hagenberg in the Mühlkreis in the Freistadt district , Upper Austria .

The Hagenberg software park was founded in 1989 by Bruno Buchberger , head of the Research Institute for Symbolic Computation  (RISC) at the University of Linz. The four founding partners of the software park are the state of Upper Austria (through the OÖ. Technologie- und Marketinggesellschaft mbH. TGM, the state's business agency), the Johannes Kepler University Linz  (JKU), the municipality of Hagenberg and the Raiffeisenlandesbank Upper Austria (through the software park Schloß Hagenberg Errichtungs- und Betriebsges.mbH ). The technology park is based on the interplay of research, training and business in the field of software and has since been built up and systematically expanded under Buchberger's leadership. This also serves in particular to promote the structurally weak area north of Linz, which thus received an economic impulse center. The founder was named Austrian of the Year in 2010 for his commitment .

In 1993 the Hagenberg campus of the Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences was founded and set up as a faculty for computer science, communication and media . A second university building followed in 2004, and a third in 2011/12.

In 1997/98 the Software Competence Center Hagenberg  (SCCH) was established here as a competence center and in July 1999 it was included in the Kplus competence center program (now COMET) of the Ministry of Science.

In 2002/03, the Bundesoberstufenrealgymnasium Hagenberg , a branch of the BORG Linz , with a school focus on communication, a relevant higher school was created.

In 2011/12, with the JKU  Christian Doppler Laboratories for Client Centric Cloud Computing (CDCC) and the Josef Ressel Center for User-friendly Secure Mobile Environments  (u'smile), two further federal research institutions (Ministry of Economics, Ministry of Innovation) were established at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria On the campus.

Around € 100 million from private and public sources were invested in the Hagenberg software park until 2009. A further € 20 million had been invested up to 2012 as part of the Innovatives OÖ 2010plus economic planning , including in the expansion of the RISC research institute, a hotel and a sports hall.

In 2013 there were 10 research institutes, 50 companies and 20 training courses in the Hagenberg software park. In 2010, R&D sales on site were just under € 10 million. Based on Buchberger's research institute RISC, around 1000 jobs were created in the Hagenberg software park, 400 of them from a radius of 15 kilometers. 1,500 people are now studying at the FH Upper Austria and the university institutes.

With the FH degree program International Studies in Informatics , or the International Incubator Hagenberg , an initiative of tech2b Inkubator  GmbH of the state of Upper Austria ( Upper Austrian Research , research agency of the state), the software park has recently increasingly focused on international activities.
