Roland Wagner (born February 20, 1952 in Linz ; † January 3, 2020 ) was an Austrian computer scientist. From 1987 he was professor for applied computer science at the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz . Wagner headed the Institute for Application-Oriented Knowledge Processing and the Institute for Integrated Studies.

Life

Roland Wagner studied computer science from 1970 to 1975 at the JKU, where he also received his doctorate. His habilitation followed in 1983. Since 1987 he has been Professor of Information Systems at JKU and built in 1990, the Institute for Applied Knowledge Processing (FAW - Institute for Application Oriented Knowledge Processing ) at the Johannes Kepler University Linz and Hagenberg Software Park , which in 1989 by Professor Bruno Buchberger founded which he has been managing since then. In 2005, Professor Wagner founded FAW GmbH in the Hagenberg software park as a spin-off from the FAW Institute.

In 1990, shortly after the opening of the borders to Eastern Europe, Wagner also began a very intensive scientific collaboration with the Technical University in Prague (Institute Professor Dr. Vladimir Marik), which has existed to date.

In the early 1990s, Wagner became involved in the field of “Computer Science Helps the Disabled”, which then became the Institute for Integrated Studies at Johannes Kepler University, which he has headed since 1990 as a board member. In 1989 he was in  charge of the founding of the International Conference on Computers for People with Special Needs (ICCHP) and in 2002 that of the Competence Network Information Technology to Promote the Integration of People with Disabilities  (KI-I) - since 2003 he has been chairman of the KI- I supervisory board.

Wagner was vice dean of studies from 1998–2000 and dean of studies from 2000 to 2002 at the Johannes Kepler University Linz, as well as being chairman of the computer science study commission for many years.

From 2003 to 2010 he was Vice President and on the board of the Working Group for Data Processing and is Vice President of the Austrian Computer Society .

In 1990 he also founded the International Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications  (DEXA) and the scientific journal Transactions on Large-Scale Data- and Knowledge-Centered Systems (Springer Verlag).

Wagner has published over 200 publications in journals and conference proceedings and is co-editor of numerous books. He was also the chairman of and / or a member of the individual scientific program committees at numerous scientific conferences.

Roland Wagner died on January 3rd, 2020.
