The RISC Software GmbH is an Upper Austrian research institution headquartered in Hagenberg Software Park in Hagenberg im Mühlkreis . Here are symbolic computation , mathematics and computer science within the areas of competence logistics computer science, industrial software applications, medical computer science and data management and analysis combined. Application-oriented research is carried out in these areas and is used in software solutions for the economy.

History and organization

The RISC Software is a non-university research institute oriented towards the common good and was founded in 1992 by Bruno Buchberger as an application-oriented part of the Research Institute for Symbolic Computation . The RISC software acts as an interface between basic research and application-oriented research. Based on basic university research, applied research is carried out by the Research Institute for Symbolic Computation and implemented in projects with partners from business and industry. RISC Software is owned by Johannes Kepler University Linz (80%) and Upper Austrian Research GmbH (20%). Within the Upper Austrian strength fields, it is located in the area of information and communication technologies , mechatronics , innovative materials / lightweight construction, life science , logistics and energy efficiency / renewable energies.

Research fields

  • Logistics Informatics

Logistics Informatics is the use of information technology to synchronize the flow of information with the flow of materials and goods. For planning and control, logistics concepts are created, the underlying processes of which can only be carried out efficiently with software support. The optimization of logistics chains or warehousing through to computer-aided route planning are based on very complex mathematical methods and models that serve as the starting point for developing algorithms.

  • Industrial software applications

Research is carried out on specialized software solutions for modeling and analysis in engineering as well as for simulations and controls of manufacturing systems and production processes.

  • Medical Informatics

The research department develops highly specialized medical software, which is based on complex scientific methods from mathematics, computer science and biomechanics , which are used to solve medical problems. The spectrum ranges from the virtual patient to biomechanical simulation and medical image processing. The area medical computer science was ahead of its inclusion in the 2008 RISC Software a research department of the Upper Austrian Research GmbH .

  • Data management and analysis

Research is carried out in the areas of systems for data analysis, knowledge management and machine learning.

Research successes

Special software

The Medical Informatics research department researches and develops internationally recognized special software , including BurnCase 3D - software for burn documentation on a 3D model that is already used in burn centers around the world, SEE-KID or MEDVIS 3D. In the SEE-KID research project, a computer-assisted simulation system was developed which enables doctors to simulate pathological malocclusions on the computer in comparison to a selected standard model and to calculate the effects of a surgical intervention on the eye muscles . Another research project resulted in the MEDVIS software, which enables doctors to create a simulation model of the patient's brain vessels from medical image data, which simulates the blood flow through the vascular system during a heartbeat and the effects can be visualized. This simulation provides the doctor with information about the disease and areas at risk that can lead to cerebral haemorrhage. A world first came in 2005 with CrashGuard, a system for collision avoidance in real time in CNC manufacturing machines. The systems are in use all over the world and research is ongoing into their further development.
