Hofkirchen im Traunkreis is a municipality in Upper Austria in the Linz-Land district in the central area with 1948 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). The community was originally part of the Enns judicial district , since January 1, 2014, the community has been part of the Steyr judicial district .
geography
Hofkirchen im Traunkreis lies at an altitude of 342 m in the central area. The extension is 6.2 km from north to south and 5.5 km from west to east. The total area is 13.9 km². 12.3% of the area is forested, 78.3% of the area is used for agriculture. Hofkirchen consists of the two cadastral communities Harmannsdorf (648.16 hectares) in the southwest and Hofkirchen im Traunkreis (744.54 hectares) in the northeast. In the north of the municipality or the cadastral municipality Hofkirchen is the district of Rappersdorf. In 2001, the Rappersdorf Rotte comprised 44 buildings and accommodated 125 residents, with the scattered settlement Distlberg , the village of Winkling and the Hoisbauer farm being also included in Rappersdorf . In the south of the cadastral community are the districts of Hofkirchen in the west and Lanzenberg in the east. The village of Hofkirchen im Traunkreis ( 342 m above sea level ) comprised 215 buildings and 774 inhabitants in 2001. The district also includes the Niederauersiedlung ( 340 m above sea level ), the Unternberg settlement ( 304 m above sea level ) and the hamlet of Mairhof. Lanzenberg includes the Rotte of the same name ( 320 m above sea level ), the scattered settlement Kammerhub, the Madersiedlung and the Rotte Wurmberg. A total of 49 houses and 149 residents belonged to Lanzenberg in 2001. In the cadastral community of Harmannsdorf, in the northeast, lies the hamlet of Harmannsdorf, which consists of the Rotte Harmannsdorf, the Aigner-Kreuz-Siedlung, the scattered settlements Krottental and Rußberg and the individual farms Bauerngruber, Edern, Feichtner, Haider, Mauhart, Rath and the Rotte Lehner. In 2001 Harmannsdorf housed 88 buildings with 280 residents. The smallest district is the scattered settlement of Kiebach with 22 houses and 66 inhabitants in the southwest of the municipality. It consists of the scattered settlement of Kiebach, the hamlet of Lichtenberg and the Kiebach airfield. Most of Kiebach, however, belongs to the neighboring municipality of Matzelsdorf. Between 2001 and 2011, the Hofkirchen district increased its population significantly, while the other districts remained almost unchanged. In 2011 Hofkirchen had 1,097 inhabitants, Harmannsdorf 284, Lanzenberg 151, Rappersdorf 132 and Kiebach 64 inhabitants.

Official description of the municipal coat of arms : Between two silver, wavy flanks in green, a silver tip, decorated with a paw cross with unequal arms split by red and silver. The municipality colors are green-white-green. The white waves on the outside represent the two streams that border Hofkirchen. The white triangle in the middle represents a steeple.
history
The earliest written documents are 1272 "Hofkirchen", 1298 "Hofchirichen" and 1375 "Hoffkhirchen". The name means near the church belonging to a courtyard .
Originally located in the eastern part of the Duchy of Bavaria , the place belonged to the Duchy of Austria since the 12th century. Since 1490 it has been assigned to the Principality of Austria ob der Enns .
During the Napoleonic Wars , the place was occupied several times.
Since 1918 the place belongs to the federal state of Upper Austria. After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the Gau Oberdonau . After 1945 the restoration of Upper Austria took place.

- Population structure
In 2014, 1810 people lived in the community, making Hofkirchen the fourth smallest of the 22 communities in the district. At the end of 2001, 95.9 percent of the population were Austrian citizens (Upper Austria 92.8 percent, Linz-Land district 91.4 percent), by the beginning of 2013 the value rose slightly to 96.0 percent (Upper Austria 91.1 percent, Linz district -Land 89.0 percent). A total of 71 foreigners were counted in the municipality in 2013, 97 percent of whom came from Europe. The largest contingent was made up of people with citizenship from the EU countries. In 2001, 83.3 percent of the population (Upper Austria: 79.4 percent) professed to be part of the Roman Catholic Church , 2.2 percent were Protestant, 8.3 percent without a denomination and 3.3 percent of Islamic faith.
The average age of the community population in 2001 was below the national average. 19.2 percent of the residents of Hofkirchen were younger than 15 years old (Upper Austria: 18.8 percent), 67.4 percent between 15 and 59 years old (Upper Austria: 61.6 percent). The proportion of residents over 59 years of age was 13.3 percent, well below the national average of 20.2 percent. As a result, the average age of the population of Hofkirchen hardly changed. The proportion of people under the age of 15 rose slightly to 19.5 percent as of January 1, 2013, while the proportion of people between the ages of 15 and 59 increased to 69.0 percent. By contrast, the proportion of people over 59 years of age fell to 11.5 percent. According to marital status, in 2001 44.3 percent of the residents of Hofkirchen were single, 48.0 percent married, 4.6 percent widowed and 3.2 percent divorced.
- Population development
Between the late 19th century and 1910 there was hardly any population movement in the community of Hofkirchen. After a slight shrinkage, the population increased back to the original value. After that, however, the population fell more significantly by around 15 percent until 1939, and then grew again by around 26 percent by 1951. Even after that, there was initially no continuous population development. After minor population losses in the 1950s and 1960s, strong growth began in 1971 and continued into the early 21st century. The number of inhabitants doubled between 1971 and 2013. Hofkirchen had a high level of immigration as early as the 1970s and at the same time benefited from a strongly positive birth balance. While the birth balance remained positive at a comparable level in the 1980s and 1990s, the municipality recorded only a low level of immigration in the 1980s. As a result, immigration increased extremely, so that the population rose by 26 percent in the 1990s and between 2001 and 2013. Most recently, since 2001, the community also recorded a strong, positive birth balance.

The municipal council, as the highest body of the municipality, has 19 seats and is elected every six years in the course of Upper Austria-wide municipal council elections. The community board consists of six members, with the community board consisting of three representatives from the ÖVP, two from the SPÖ and one from the FPÖ.
The strongest force in community politics is the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP), which since 1973, with one exception, has been able to achieve an absolute majority in every election and an absolute majority in every election. With election results between 49 and 68 percent, the ÖVP was able to achieve its best result to date during this period in 1979. The second strongest party in the community since 1973 was the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ), which won between 23 and 40 percent in the elections. The SPÖ achieved its best election result in 2003. The third strongest force in the community is the FPÖ, which was unable to win a seat in the 1979 election and was subsequently neither represented on the local council in 1979 nor 1985. It was not until 1991 that the FPÖ managed to move back in, and in 1997 it achieved its best result to date with 18 percent. With the exception of two election years, only the three named parties ran for office in Hofkirchen. In 1991 a list failed to enter the local council, in 2009 the BZÖ with 2.9 percent of the vote. In the 2009 municipal council elections, the ÖVP received 58.3 percent or 12 seats, the SPÖ 30.7 percent or 6 seats and the FPÖ 8.1 percent or one seat.

- The saddlery museum shows a workshop as it was common in the region at the beginning of the 20th century and is housed in the house of the last saddler in Hofkirchen. The collection includes the following focal points such as B. Tools and furnishings in a saddler's workshop, a comprehensive specialist library and a collection of photos and documents on the saddler's trade.

- Workplaces and employees
Hofkirchen only houses one workplace with 20 or more employees. The workplace census carried out as part of the census in 2001 in Hofkirchen showed 51 workplaces with 198 employees (excluding agriculture), 82 percent of which were employees. The number of workplaces had risen by 24 (plus 89 percent) compared to 1991, the number of employees by 117 people (plus 144 percent). The most important branch of the economy in 2001 was the construction industry with eight workplaces and 44 employees (22 percent of the employees in Hofkirchen). This was followed by manufacturing with seven workplaces and 37 employees, as well as health, veterinary and social services with four workplaces with 31 employees. 51 percent of the employees in Hofkirchen were salaried employees or civil servants, 27 percent blue-collar workers and 17 percent business owners.
Of the 957 economically active persons living in Hofkirchen in 2010, only 2.8% were unemployed. Of the 930 employed, 176 were employed in manufacturing (19 percent), 173 in trade (19 percent) and 94 in health and social services (10 percent). Other important sectors were construction with 62 employees (7 percent), professional and technical services with 61 employees (7 percent) as well as public administration, education and health care (6 percent each) and agriculture and forestry (5 percent) . Of the 896 employed persons from Hofkirchen (excluding employed residents temporarily absent from work), only 138 persons were employed in Hofkirchen in 2010. 758 or 85 percent had to commute to work. Of the out-commuters, 31 percent had their place of work in the Linz-Land district and 40 percent in the city of Linz. The most important commuting communities after Linz were Steyr , St. Florian , Wels , Enns and Ansfelden . In return, 98 in-commuters found work in Hofkirchen in 2010.
- Agriculture and Forestry
In 2010 the statistics showed 33 agricultural and forestry operations for the municipality of Hofkirchen im Traunkreis. These included 18 full-time businesses, 14 part-time businesses and a community of people. The total number of businesses had fallen sharply by 21 businesses or 39 percent compared to 1999, with the number of part-time businesses in particular falling sharply. The farms jointly cultivated a total of 1,033 hectares in 2010, with 68 percent of the area being farmed by full-time farmers and 27 percent by part-time farmers. The average area of full-time farmers was 38.9 hectares, around half of the Upper Austrian average.

- Roads: Hofkirchen is accessible by four state roads. The Tillysburgerstraße runs from the center of Hofkirchen to the north and connects the community via the neighboring community of St. Florian with Asten . The Thannstraße (L 1349) runs from northwest to southeast through the municipality and connects Hofkirchen with the center of St. Florian in the north and the city of Steyr in the southeast. The Weichstettenstrasse (L 1397) runs from Hofkirchen to the west and connects the community with Kiebach, the Matzelsdorfer Strasse (L 1365) branches off from the Thannstrasse to the southwest and runs to Matzelsdorf in the community of Schiedelberg .
- Bus: The municipality is connected to the public transport network by bus routes 402, 411, 412 and 421. Line 421 connects Hofkirchen to Niederneukirchen in the north and Steyr in the south, bus line 412 runs from St. Florian via Niederneukirchen to Hofkirchen, line 411 only from Niederneukirchen to Hofkirchen. With the line 402, the community citizens can reach the city of Enns.

education
The school in Hofkirchen im Traunkreis was originally connected to the rectory and was held in the sacristan's house, which was demolished in 1979. Today's schoolhouse was built between 1858 and 1859 and expanded or completely renovated several times. The elementary school was named in 1953 after the teacher, choir conductor and composer Friedrich Arnleitner (1845–1903) and is a listed building. In the 2012/13 school year, the Hofkirchen elementary school had five classes, after it had always been four classes before. The kindergarten in Hofkirchen is run by the Hofkirchen parish. The house offers space for four kindergarten groups (one of which is an integration group) and a crèche. A maximum of ten children between the ages of one and a half and three years are looked after in the crèche.
