Alfred Haberpointner (2013)

Alfred Haberpointner (* 1966 in Salzburg ) is an Austrian sculptor .

Life

After attending the Hallein School of Sculpture , he studied from 1986 to 1991 at the Linz Art University with Professor Erwin Reiter . Study trips to New York, Paris and longer stays around Genoa followed. During these years he was mainly concerned with proportions, and there were series of works entitled “Weighting”. Its development continued in the areas of structure, space and texture. Body and space as well as the interlinking of the two are themes that are still present in the works to this day. Alfred Haberpointner lives and works in Leonding near Linz and Ebenau in Salzburg.

Alfred Haberpointner is a sculptor who consciously turns to wood in his work: “This kind of love for wood is decisive. On the one hand, it's something that I'm very attached to. On the other hand, I try to overcome this bond, to shake it off again, to push it into the background. "

In Alfred Haberpointner's work, the displacement of wood is primarily a displacement of wood-sightedness. In various works, he covers the entire surface with closely spaced iron plates. Haberpointner takes a more drastic approach to some heads, which he completely covers with lead. However, the openness of the artistic method is decisive for the perception of the sculptures: The iron plates, for example, still reveal the wooden body underneath, and the seams of the lead jacket first indicate that this is just a shell and not a solid metal object . Haberpointner proceeds counterpoint with his chopped or beaten objects, in which he virtually illustrates the properties of wood. With chainsaws and targeted ax blows, he tears open the surface, exposes the fibers of the material and thus creates a texture whose rhythm, directionality or intensity the viewer seeks to understand. What both approaches have in common is a confrontation with the material, be it through affirmation or conscious negation.

Works by Alfred Haberpointner

Alfred Haberpointner's works require close observation, literal reading of traces. Haberpointner's preoccupation with series of works shows how subtle and varied these signs are. Again and again and persistently, the artist devotes himself to an elementary problem: while in the 1990s it was primarily questions of proportion that he tried to fathom in countless of his so-called weightings, it is time and again the human head that the artist draws on and serially thoroughly declined. For Haberpointner's understanding of art, it is elementary that the artist is involved in a process of finding forms that is comparable to nature: “With the exception of the works on and with paper, it is often a long, almost meditative work of days, weeks, about a work bring to a conclusion. Nature basically does the same thing! This process, which I try to transfer to a material, is usually a lengthy one. So it is not the spontaneous expression that is in the foreground here, but the finding of the form over a certain temporal continuity. "
