life and work

After completing primary and secondary school in Leonding from 1949 to 1957, Franz Ecker attended the Episcopal Seminar in Linz between 1957 and 1962 . He then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna , where he received lessons in art education and painting from Professors Pauser and Böckl. In 1967 he passed his diploma as an academic painter.

Between 1974 and 1999 there were numerous exhibitions of his works both in Germany and abroad. The exhibitions in the Lehner Gallery in Linz in 1974 and 1975 as well as those in the New York Gallery 128 in 1987 were groundbreaking for Ecker .

On May 8, 1981, Ecker's father was found hanged. One year later, on June 9th, the artist married his girlfriend Klaudia Sprengel. The divorce took place in 1992.

In 1999 Franz Ecker died in Leonding as a result of severe liver disease.

style

Shaped by his time at the Academy of Fine Arts and the influences of classical modernism, Ecker made the problems of space and surface, line and color his central artistic concern. The struggle for the form, the veracity of the design and the claim to the highest expressiveness form the basic artistic concept of the artist. He was an outsider to society who denied the art market. That is why he spent his entire life looking for development in terms of form and content.

Ecker's style is based on the visual arts of the 20th century, whereby his oeuvre not only refers to classical modernism, but also takes up elements from later art movements such as pop art or action painting .

In 1965 and 1966 Ecker received the Füger Prize in gold from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.

In 2004 a memorial exhibition for the artist took place in Leonding. In Leonding a street was named after Ecker.

In 2010 the documentary "Are you lonesome ... Franz X.Ecker" by director Andreas Egger was released, a moving tour through the life story of the Linz artist.
