Oddo Scharz

Oddo Scharz OSB ( baptized name Johann Jakob , born November 11, 1691 in Scharnstein , † January 16, 1749 in Kematen an der Krems ) was an Austrian Benedictine priest , canon lawyer and university teacher .

Life

Scharz studied philosophy at the University of Graz and entered the Benedictine order in Kremsmünster Abbey in 1709 . He took the name Oddo when taking the religious vows. This was followed by a degree in theology and law at the University of Salzburg , which he concluded with a disputation in canon law on July 22, 1716. From 1718 to 1723 he taught at the Stiftsgymnasium Kremsmünster . In the meantime he was repeatedly active in pastoral care. In 1731 he was appointed papal notary .

Scharz was in 1733 at the University of Salzburg to the doctor of law doctorate and then received a professor of canon law . He was also appointed to the High Princely Spiritual Council . In 1734 he belonged to the delegation of the University of Salzburg, which was responsible for the opening of the new University of Fulda under Prince Abbot Adolf von Dalberg . In this train he was appointed lifelong assessor of the local law faculty. He remained in the apprenticeship until 1741 because of his poor health. However, he subsequently became rector of the Salzburg University. He held this office until 1744. During this time he was appointed privy councilor. As rector, he took experimental physics into the university's curriculum.

After the end of his university career, Scharz returned to the Kremsmünster Abbey and then took over the pastorate of Kematen. He finally died there.
