Wilhelm Bortenschlager

Wilhelm Bortenschlager (born December 29, 1911 in Aurolzmünster ) is an Austrian literary scholar.

Live and act

After attending the humanistic grammar school in Ried im Innkreis , Bortenschlager studied German and classical philology at the University of Vienna . Among his teachers were the Germanist Josef Nadler and the literary historian Hans Rupprich . Bortenschlager completed his studies in 1935 with a dissertation on the poet August von Kotzebue . After taking the teaching examination , he was initially a teacher at the grammar school . He later initiated theater projects and taught at the Federal Pedagogical University in Linz . The often culturally active Bortenschlager was an honorary member of the Innviertel artists' guild .

Wilhelm Bortenschlager was mainly known for his numerous works on German literary history and contemporary literature , which took into account all areas of literature. Among other things, he is the author of a three-volume “German History of Literature” and a lexicon, which is regarded as the standard work on modern Austrian dramatists.

Bortenschlager was in close contact with numerous writers about whom he wrote. Among them are Carl Heinz Kurz , Peter Coryllis and Fritz Hochwälder .
