Michelangelo Unterberger
Michelangelo Unterberger , also Michael Angelo Unterberger and Michelangelo Unterperger (born August 11, 1695 in Cavalese , † June 27, 1758 in Vienna ) was a South Tyrolean painter of the Baroque .
Life
He was the brother of Franz Sebald Unterberger and was apprenticed to Giuseppe Alberti (1640–1716) in Cavalese. He completed his knowledge on a study trip to Venice, where he preferred to copy works by the painter Nicola Grassi (1682–1754) . He then moved to Bolzano , where he received citizenship in 1726 and, among other things, painted a painting with the judgment of Solomon for the town hall.
In the years around 1730 Unterberger worked as an altar painter for monasteries and churches in Passau and on the Lower Inn . His works for the Augustinian canons of St. Nikola have been lost. The following paintings have survived: the baptism of Christ in the nearby Vornbach monastery , the Holy Family in the Kurhaus chapel near Schärding , the martyrdom of St. Mauritius (1732) in the parish church in Aurolzmünster and the Holy Family in the parish church of St. Florian am Inn .
In 1737 Unterberger moved to Vienna, where he settled permanently. Unterberger quickly established himself as one of the leading altar painters in the imperial city, who also received a number of commissions from the imperial court and its immediate vicinity. In 1744, for example, he painted an altarpiece “Handing over the Rosary to the Holy. Dominikus und Katharina von Siena “for the Dominican church in Bolzano , which is today in the high altar of the parish church Maria Himmelfahrt in Kaltern .
In the years from 1751 to 1754 and 1757 to 1758 Michael Angelo Unterberger was Rector of the kk Academie der Mahlerey, Bildhauerey und Baukunst, today's Academy of Fine Arts Vienna . The title "rector magnificus" was first bestowed on the painter in 1751 by Empress Maria Theresa .
He spent his twilight years in and around Vienna , where, among other things, he created an altarpiece for St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna .
In 1899, Unterbergergasse in Vienna- Brigittenau (20th district) was named after him.
