Giuseppe Alberti: St. Vigilius of Trient (1673)

Giuseppe Alberti (born October 8, 1640 in Tesero , Fiemme Valley , Trentino , † February 3, 1716 in Cavalese ) was an Italian painter and architect of the Baroque period . The painting school he founded had far-reaching influence in Trentino and South Tyrol .

The baroque artist Giuseppe Alberti must not be confused with the painter of the same name Giuseppe Alberti (1763–1845).

Life

Giuseppe Alberti came from a noble family of notaries who moved from Bormio to the Fiemme Valley. Giuseppe was the penultimate (eighth or tenth) child of Bernardino Alberti and his wife Caterina Betta di Varena and was consecrated to the clergy. In 1665 he was ordained a priest. However, he attended medical and legal lectures at the University of Padua from 1664 to 1667 , which he did not finish because of his increasing interest in painting.

After he first became acquainted with Venetian Mannerism with an unknown local artist, his style changed through his apprenticeship with Pietro Liberi 1668–1673. In the following years he probably came to Rome, where he got to know the art of frescoes and probably also studied architecture. From 1682 he stayed in Trentino again, mainly in the area of Trento and Bolzano . This stay was only interrupted by an order in Vicenza in 1687/88.

While his architectural work has not yet been researched (as of 1992), Alberti gained national fame through his painting. Michelangelo Unterberger , Paul Troger and Johann Georg Dominikus Grasmair attended his painting school .
