Nicolò Rasmo (born July 6, 1909 in Trento , † December 5, 1986 in Bolzano ) was an Italian art historian and monument conservator .

Rasmo graduated from the University of Florence with a degree in medieval art history , which he completed in 1933 with a thesis on the Castello del Buonconsiglio . From 1939 he worked for Soprintendenza alle Belle Arti , located in Trento , initially as an inspector, and from 1960 to 1974 as the top regional curator. From 1939 to 1981 he also acted as director of the Bolzano City Museum , which he described in 1939 as an institution adapted to the new political climate, but rejected its racist, nationalist demarcation. So he strictly refused to delimit the collections of the city museum according to imaginary nationalistic points of view in order to prevent the relocation of the items classified as "German" to the German Reich . He was happy to repeat to his employees that he was solely dedicated to art history.

For many years Rasmo was an extremely productive author on regional art-historical topics and played a pioneering role in this through his precise style criticism , precise references to execution techniques and problems of conservation as well as consideration of the theory and practice of restoration . He also dealt with controversial political issues such as the Italian toponomastics introduced by Ettore Tolomei in South Tyrol , which he described as an ideologically determined pseudo-scientific work and which stood in the way of the necessary understanding.

Rasmo's scientific activity was reflected in around 500 books and articles, many of which were published in the journal Cultura atesina - Kultur des Etschlandes , which he founded and which he directed between 1947 and 1976 . The reference work Dizionario degli artisti atesini (of which only the lemmas A-B appeared) and the monographs on Michael Pacher (1969), Affreschi medievali atesini (1971), L'età cavalleresca in Val d'Adige (1980 ) deserve special mention ) and art treasures of South Tyrol (1985).
