history
Today's municipality Eitzing was formed from the earlier tax municipalities Eitzing, Berg and Kirchberg. The church was founded in 1881.
According to legend, the community of Eitzing (originally: Icingen) is said to have got its name from a certain Izo, who is considered to be the ancestor of the Eitzinger family and who was the first to settle with his clan on the area of today's community around 600 AD .
The castle of the nobles of Itzing stood on a hill in the town of Obereitzing as early as the 12th century . The Eitzing family remained in the possession of the Eitzing family until the second half of the 15th century. By inheritance Eitzing came to the Hohenfelder zu Aistersheim and Almeck, who sold it to Count Ortolf von Trattenbach ( St. Martin ) in 1638 . In the 17th century, Obereitzing Castle was no longer inhabited and left to decay. The “Hofbauer” straightened himself out in his outbuildings. In the 19th century a new farmstead was built at the foot of the Schlossberg. There used to be five fish ponds on the north side of the hill, one of which has been preserved.
Population development
The sharp increase in population since 1991 occurred because both the birth balance and the migration balance were positive.
Culture and sights
- The Eitzing parish church is said to have been founded by the nobles von Eitzing. From 1400 to 1785 Eitzing was a branch of the Church of St. Mauritius in Aurolzmünster. With the court decree of Emperor Joseph II on March 6, 1784, Eitzing was elevated to an independent parish. The church is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and has always been the destination of pilgrims. Pope Pius IX gave the church a perfect indulgence for the feast of the Assumption. The pilgrimage of the Ried people goes back to a vow on the occasion of a fire in Ried im Innkreis in 1704 and even today the church is visited by pilgrims from the deanery Ried im Innkreis and all of Upper Austria. The high altar dates from 1637 and is the work of the carpenter Hans Widmann and the sculptor Ludwig Vogel from Ried im Innkreis. The seated Madonna in a protective cloak is assigned to the year 1480. The statues on the side altars, on the left, depicting Saints Georg and Jakob, and on the right, Saints Sebastian and Florian are a work by Thomas Schwanthaler from 1660/61. The chapel of the dead with rococo stucco and frescoes by Johann Prinner is worth mentioning in 1758 on the south-west corner of the church. It is considered a rarity in art historical circles and is unique in Upper Austria. It was completely restored in 1988/89 and is a listed building.
