St. Georgen bei Obernberg am Inn , also Sankt Georgen bei Obernberg am Inn , is a municipality in Upper Austria in the Ried im Innkreis district in the Innviertel with 568 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). The community is located in the judicial district of Ried im Innkreis .
geography
St. Georgen bei Obernberg am Inn is located at an altitude of 354 m in the Innviertel. The extension is 6.7 km from north to south and 5 km from west to east. The total area is 18.3 km². 5.5% of the area is forested, 86.3% of the area is used for agriculture.

coat of arms
Official description of the municipal coat of arms: “In silver over a red, upwardly curved, opposing, black armored and red-tongued dragon, which is pierced obliquely to the left by a black, fallen lance, which ends at the top as a patriarchal cross with clover-leaf ends, three blue, upright and butting Diamonds in the right upper corner. "
Meaning: dragon and lance indicate the patron saint of the parish “St. Georg ”, the patriarchal cross on the lance the former affiliation of the parish to the Archdiocese of Passau and the three blue diamonds the affiliation of the Innviertel and thus the municipal area to Bavaria until 1779.
By resolution of December 1, 1986, the Upper Austrian provincial government approved the "blue-white-red" community colors set by the community council of the community of St. Georgen near Obernberg am Inn in the meeting on October 8, 1986.
history
Since the founding of the Duchy of Bavaria, the place was Bavarian until 1779 and came to Austria after the Treaty of Teschen with the Innviertel (then "Innbaiern"). Briefly Bavarian again during the Napoleonic Wars , since 1814 it has finally belonged to Upper Austria.
After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the Gau Oberdonau . After 1945 the restoration of Upper Austria took place.
In 2019, the community received the Impuls Award for the revitalization of the town center .
politics
Mayor is Gerhard Wipplinger (ÖVP). Vice Mayor Maria Kobler (ÖVP).
Since September 2015 there are 9 municipal council seats for the ÖVP and four seats for the FPÖ.
Population development
In 1991 the municipality had 578 inhabitants according to the census, in 2001 it had 603 inhabitants. The increase was due to the positive birth balance (+40), which also canceled out the negative migration balance (−15). From 2001 to 2011 the birth rate decreased (+12) and emigration increased (−26), so that the population decreased to 589.
Culture and sights
- The Catholic parish church of St. Georgen near Obernberg am Inn is a Gothic tuff square building with a single nave and a slightly retracted choir .
- The family chapel was created in 2011 from a project by a neighborhood in the village of Nonsbach. The architect Franz Koppelstätter planned the chapel, the space of which is flooded with light.
