911 out! is a card game that consists of 80 playing cards ; The cards are printed with the natural numbers from one to twenty in one of the four colors (blue, green, red and orange, but originally yellow). In a first version of the game there were only three suits and 60 cards. The aim of the game is to be the first to run out of cards by continuously discarding them. There is also a junior edition in which the cards are illustrated with animal motifs.

The cards of the game (edition by Hausser)

The card game first appeared in the Hausser catalog in 1925. After the Hausser company went bankrupt in 1983, the Ravensburger company sells the card game.

Course of the game

At the beginning of the game, cards are dealt to two to six players; 20 cards (or 40 cards in the case of 2 players) remain face down on a pile of cards. The first card to be placed on the table is the red elf . If no red penalty has been given, the color order for penalty is yellow-green-blue. After that, cards can be placed in turn: either to a next higher or next lower number of the cards of the same suit that are open on the table. Each player can display any number of matching cards. If it cannot be discarded, up to three cards must be drawn from the deck. This creates four rows of numbers.

Strategic

The game is not a pure game of chance as it contains a tactical element: you can hold back a card that you could actually play in order to block other players with lower or higher numbers of the same suit. However, the player must play at least one card if he can. Since a maximum of eight different cards could be placed for each game situation (but usually there are fewer, as at the beginning of the game either not all rows are open or the first rows have already ended towards the middle), these cards apply to all of them Players like dividing the draw pile, the tactical element is usually very limited and you have to be lucky to be able to use it sensibly. Because there is only one clear path to each card, one is often dependent on luck. For example, if a card that a player needs to win is at the bottom of the draw pile (the probability of this being very high), all cards must first be drawn before that player can even win. There are even situations in which a player, regardless of what he and the others are playing, cannot win under any circumstances just from the cards that were dealt to him at the beginning of the game. With four to six players, it is even very likely that this disadvantage will affect at least one.

How to play

The game lasts about 20 minutes and, according to the manufacturer, is intended for people aged 7 and over. The game instructions describe 13 variants of the basic rule and other card games. In the "Change Numbers" variant, each color can also be started with a ten or twelve instead of the eleven, and in the "Draw" variant (as in the French card game "Domino") the first player determines which number plays the role Elf takes over.

Among the other games described are adaptations by Schnipp-Schnapp, Quartett and Schwarzer Peter .

The game cards can also be used to play the card game variant "Trick guessing" , also known as "Trick announcements".

Gaming community

The game is particularly widespread in south-west Germany and was also popular in the pietistic and evangelical environment because, unlike others, it does without the "sinful" images and symbols of classic card games .

2012 appeared out with Elfer! The board game a variant developed by Reiner Knizia in the form of a placement game .

The game is played with tiles modeled on the cards, which have to be placed on pre-printed fields on the game board. The rules of the game are based on those of the card game: At the beginning each player receives a certain number of tiles. The color rows are again opened by laying out the corresponding 11 tiles, additional tiles must be placed on tiles that are already on display. Compared to the card game, however, various additional rules have been incorporated that make the game more flexible: For example, all 1 and 20 fields are considered to be adjacent to each other, as are some other fields. Some numbers are colorless and can therefore be created for each of the four colors. In addition, some actions allow bonus moves or tiles to be given to the neighbor.
