James Sullivan (born April 22, 1744 in Berwick , Province of Massachusetts Bay , †  December 10, 1808 in Boston , Massachusetts ) was an American politician and governor of the state of Massachusetts from 1807 to 1808 .

Early years

James Sullivan came from a politically active family. His brother John was a member of the Continental Congress for New Hampshire from 1774 to 1776 . His nephew George was a member of the US House of Representatives from 1811 to 1813 . James Sullivan was born in Berwick, then part of Massachusetts, but in today York County in the State of Maine is located. He was raised by his father, who also taught him the necessary schooling. James then went on to study law. In 1780 he was one of the first members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . Sullivan was a judge on a Massachusetts court between 1775 and 1782, although he was not admitted to the bar until around 1782. After this admission he began to work in his profession in Biddeford .

Political rise

Between 1774 and 1775 James Sullivan was a member of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress; from 1775 to 1776 he was a member of the Massachusetts Parliament . In the years 1782 and 1783 he was elected to the Continental Congress, but without taking part in its meetings. In 1787 Sullivan was a member of the Massachusetts Governing Council and in 1788 was a probate judge in Suffolk County . James Sullivan was Attorney General of his home state from 1790 to 1807 . During this time, he unsuccessfully applied for the office of governor five times.

Massachusetts Governor

On April 6, 1807, Sullivan was elected as a candidate for the Democratic Republican Party for governor of his state. He was confirmed a year later. He held this office between May 29, 1807 and his death on December 10, 1808. During this period, political differences arose between the governor and the legislature over the procedure for appointing electorates for federal offices. Before he became governor, Sullivan founded the Massachusetts Historical Society . James Sullivan was married twice and had a total of nine children.
