Endicott Peabody

Endicott "Chub" Peabody (born February 15, 1920 in Lawrence , Essex County , Massachusetts , † December 1, 1997 in Hollis , New Hampshire ) was an American politician and from 1963 to 1965 governor of the state of Massachusetts.

Early years and political advancement

After elementary school, Peabody went to Harvard University and became a great athlete on the university's football team ; later he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame . In 1948 he graduated from Harvard law. His studies were interrupted by World War II, in which he participated as a member of the US Navy .

His political career began after the war. Peabody joined the Democratic Party . In 1950 he was one of the regional advisors to the Price Stability Commission. In 1952 he also advised the Commission for the Management of Smaller Defense Facilities. Between 1954 and 1956 he was on the advisory board of Governor Christian Herter . In 1960 he was campaign coordinator for John F. Kennedy in the states of West Virginia , Pennsylvania and New Hampshire . After he had previously unsuccessfully applied for various government offices in Massachusetts, Endicott Peabody was elected governor in 1962 against incumbent John Volpe , the candidate of the Republican Party .

Massachusetts Governor

Peabody took up his new office on January 3, 1963. During his two-year reign, an advisory commission was established to deal with the enforcement of civil rights laws. At that time some amendments to the state constitution were passed and some administrative reforms were made. Among other things, the terms of office of the elected members of the government, including those of the governors, were uniformly set at four years. In the gubernatorial elections of 1964 Peabody lost to his previous Lieutenant Governor Francis X. Bellotti , who in turn was defeated in the actual elections to John Volpe.

In 1966, Peabody ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the US Senate . In 1972 he applied unsuccessfully within his party for the nomination for the office of US Vice President . In 1983 he moved to Hollis, New Hampshire, where he subsequently unsuccessfully applied for political offices at various levels. Endicott Peabody died in December 1997. He had three children with his wife, Barbara Gibbons. He was a descendant of John Endecott , who was multiple governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony between 1629 and 1665 .
