Maurice Joseph Tobin (born May 22, 1901 in Roxbury , Massachusetts , † July 19, 1953 in Scituate , Massachusetts) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ), between 1948 and 1953 under President Harry S. Truman 6th Secretary of Labor of the United States States and previously the 56th governor of Massachusetts between 1945 and 1947 .

Career

Maurice Joseph Tobin was born in Roxbury, a borough of Boston , in 1901 and grew up there. Tobin studied law for a few semesters at Boston College , but he never graduated. Tobin pursued various professional activities, for example he worked briefly at a leather company and at the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company . His political career began when he was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1927. In 1937 Tobin prevailed against his rival James Michael Curley for the office of Mayor of Boston. Tobin was governor of Massachusetts from January 2, 1945, and served almost exactly two years until January 2, 1947. Tobin was a member of Harry S. Truman's cabinet from August 13, 1948, and served until January 20, 1953 as Secretary of Labor of the United States.
