Eugene Scalia (born August 14, 1963 in Cleveland , Ohio ) is an American lawyer who has served as the United States Secretary of Labor since September 30, 2019 . He is a member of the Republican Party and is considered to be close to the employer. As a lawyer, Scalia has many years of experience in defending large companies against financial and labor regulations.

Life

Scalia was born in Cleveland in 1963 to Antonin Scalia and Maureen Scalia (née McCarthy). His father Antonin was also a lawyer and became a US Supreme Court Justice in 1986 . Scalia graduated from the University of Virginia with degrees in economics and political science . He then attended the University of Chicago Law School , where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the University of Chicago Law Review and graduated with a Juris Doctor . From 1985 to 1987 he was an advisor and speechwriter to Secretary of Education William J. Bennett . From 1992 to 1993 he served as a special assistant to the Attorney General and later Attorney General William Barr . Scalia has worked in private practice as a lawyer in Washington, DC and Los Angeles . In 2000 his law firm, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, represented George W. Bush before the US Supreme Court in the Bush v. Gore as a result of the 2000 US presidential election . His father Antonin ultimately ruled the lawsuit in Bush's favor.

He served as a solicitor in the Department of Labor after being appointed by President George W. Bush in April 2001 and assuming that position in January 2002 after a recess appointment . This has been criticized by the Democratic Party and workers' organizations for having acted as a lawyer suing the government on behalf of several large companies to crack down on existing financial and labor regulations. He held the office as Solicitor of Labor for almost a year until January 17, 2002 and then worked again as a private lawyer.

On July 18, 2019, President Donald Trump announced that he would nominate Scalia as the next Minister of Labor. On September 26, 2019, the Senate confirmed his nomination with 53:44 votes. Scalia was sworn in by Vice President Mike Pence and took office on September 30th .

Private

Scalia is married and has 7 children.
