Alexis Margaret Herman (born July 16, 1947 in Mobile , Alabama ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ), who served as Secretary of Labor of the United States from May 1, 1997 to January 20, 2001 in the cabinet of President Bill Clinton .

Life

Alexis Herman was born in 1947 as the daughter of the politician Alex Herman and the teacher Gloria Caponis in Mobile and grew up there. After her graduation in 1965 she attended the Edgewood College in Madison ( Wisconsin ) and the Spring Hill College in her hometown of Mobile, its made Bachelor in sociology but in 1969 from Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans . In 1977, under President Jimmy Carter , aged 29, Herman became the youngest woman to become director of the Labor Department's Women's Bureau .

In 1981, Herman started her own consultancy, AM Herman & Associates . From 1988 to 1991 she served as the Vice Chair Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee . Following the election of Bill Clinton, she took on 20 January 1993, the management of the Liaison Office of the White House to the state and local governments ( White House Office of Public Liaison ), which she held until May 1, 1997th On that day she was appointed Labor Secretary in the Clinton Cabinet to succeed Robert Reich . In 2000, Herman married Dr. Charles Franklin, today she works alongside James Roosevelt Jr. as Vice President of the Democratic National Committee's Rules and Bylaws Committee . In 2004 and 2008 she participated as a delegate at the Democratic National Conventions .
