The Bishop of Rockford , Arthur Joseph O'Neill , ordained him on 26 June 1976 for the priest .
Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Bishop of Lafayette, Indiana on May 12, 2010 . The Archbishop of Indianapolis , Daniel Mark Buechlein OSB , donated him episcopal ordination on July 15 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Thomas George Doran , Bishop of Rockford, and Gerald Andrew Gettelfinger , Ex- Bishop of Lafayette, Indiana. As a motto , he chose The word of God is not chained .
