Northumberland is a borough in Northumberland County in Pennsylvania , United States . In 2010 the borough had 3,804 inhabitants.

Northumberland's geographic coordinates are 40 ° 54 ′ N , 76 ° 48 ′ W (40.893935, −76.795975), about 95 km northeast of Harrisburg . The place is at the confluence of the West Branch Susquehanna River in the Susquehanna River .
According to the United States Census Bureau , the borough has an area of 4.1 km 2 , there are no significant bodies of water.
history
Northumberland was founded in 1772. The land where Northumberland would later be located was bought by the Iroquois in the first Fort Stanwix Treaty in 1768 . During the American Revolution , Northumberland was evacuated during the Big Runaway in 1778 and was not repopulated until 1784.
The British theologian , spiritual natural philosopher and political theorist Joseph Priestley lived in Northumberland from 1794 until his death in 1804 . The Joseph Priestley House still stands on the Priestley Avenue and is known as a National Historic Landmark classified. Another property in Northumberland is listed on the National Register of Historic Places : the Priestley-Forsyth Memorial Library , built by a great grandson of Joseph Priestley. Much of the borough is part of the Northumberland Historic District .

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Northumberland had 3714 people. The population density was 913.4 people per km 2 . There were 1772 housing units at an average of 435.8 per km 2 . The population in Northumberland consisted of 98.38% of White , 0.73% Black or African American , 0.13% Native American , 0.9% Asian , 0% Pacific Islander , 0.40% said other races to belong and 0.16% named two or more races. 0.62% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.
The residents of Northumberland were distributed to 1,657 households out of which 25.9% had children under the age of 18. 50.3% of households were married, 10.3% had a female head of household without a husband, and 36.9% were not families. 32.0% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 13.3% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.22 and the average family size was 2.79 people.
The population was divided into 21.7% minors, 6.7% 18–24 year olds, 29.2% 25–44 year olds, 24.2% 45–64 year olds and 18.2% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 women there were 90.1 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 85.8 men.
The median household income in Northumberland was 31,891 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 38,807 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 31,162 compared to $ 22,203 for women. administration
The Borough of Northumberland is governed by a council of seven members plus the mayor, with the mayor playing a largely ceremonial role. Council members have a four-year term. The current mayor is Len Zboray, who replaced Gretchen Brosius in July 2011.
Personalities
The English chemist Joseph Priestley lived in Northumberland during the last decade of his life, where he died in 1804. His house still exists and is a museum.
Major General Uzal Girard Ent , who commanded the air raid on the Romanian oil refineries in Ploieşti in August 1943 , Theodore Van Kirk , the navigator of the Enola Gay during the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, and Daniel McFarlan Moore , an electrical engineer and inventor of the lamp named after him, were born here .
Writer David Fulmer , who has written several novels about the former red-light district of Storyville in New Orleans , was born and raised in Northumberland.
