Clarence Isador Lubin (born October 15, 1900 in Albany , Georgia , † November 25, 1989 ) was an American mathematician .

Life

He grew up in Cincinnati , in the state of Ohio , and attended the Hughes High School. He then matriculated to study chemical engineering at the University of Cincinnati . There he played college football and was a member of the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity .

He was able to complete his studies in 1923 and subsequently worked as a teacher at the University's College of Engineering until his retirement in 1971. In 1925 he became a member of the Mathematical Association of America and for the 1927–28 term he served as President of the Mathematical Club of Harvard University . In June 1929 he was at Harvard University with a dissertation on singular points of second-order system of real differential equations for Ph.D. PhD in mathematics and was appointed Assistant Professor in Cincinnati that same year. When his friend and former fellow student Charles V. Theis (1900–1987) - a well-known hydrogeologist in later years - developed a basic formula for sinking funnels analogous to heat flow (Theis' well equation, Theis equation), he recognized Lubin's support , since both had been in fruitful scientific correspondence beforehand . Lubin was promoted to associate professor in October 1937. In the summer of 1943, he got a job with the New York City- based Kellex Corporation, a subsidiary of the MW Kellogg Company, which was involved in the Manhattan Project . Together with other mathematicians, he was involved in the planning of a uranium enrichment plant at Oak Ridge National Laboratory .

Lubin remained unmarried until the age of 54. His hobbies included hiking and camping in Canada .
