James Wiggins

James Russell Wiggins (born December 4, 1903 in Luverne , Rock County , Minnesota , †  November 19, 2000 in Ellsworth , Maine ) was an American journalist , editor and diplomat .

biography

Wiggins was initially a journalist and in 1947 first editor , 1955 executive editor and 1960 editor and executive vice chairman of the Washington Post , the largest daily newspaper in the United States . In 1962 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

In late September 1968 he resigned from the post at the Washington Post after he had been appointed US Ambassador to the United Nations by US President Lyndon B. Johnson . He held this position during the final months of the Johnson administration until 1969.
