Zalmay Khalilzad or Salmai Khalilsad ( Pashtun زلمی خلیلزاد Zalmay Chalīlzād , born March 22, 1951 in Mazar -e Sharif , Kingdom of Afghanistan ) was permanent representative (ambassador) of the USA in Afghanistan , Iraq and most recently at the United Nations (UN) under the Bush administration . Prior to that, he was special advisor to the US Department of State for Afghanistan.

Life

Before joining the Bush cabinet, Khalilzad was a member of the neoconservative think tank Project for the New American Century (PNAC) and an advisor to the oil company Unocal . There he was the most important Muslim . He belongs to the Republican Party .

After serving as United States Ambassador to Afghanistan from November 2003 to June 2005 , President Bush appointed him Ambassador to Iraq . On February 12, 2007, Bush proposed him as the successor to John R. Bolton and the interim acting Alejandro Daniel Wolff as official UN ambassador to the United States . On March 29, 2007, the Democratic Party- dominated US Senate upheld the proposal. Zalmay Khalilzad was also President of the United Nations Security Council for May 2007. After Barack Obama's victory in the 2008 presidential election , he was forced to hand over his post to Susan E. Rice .

The Pashtun grew up in Kabul , where he attended the private school Ghazi Lycée . Today he is married to the Austrian author Cheryl Benard . They live in Maryland with their two sons .

Khalilzad is a member of the right-wing conservative " Project for the New American Century ".
