Donald Franchot McHenry (born October 13, 1936 in St. Louis , Missouri ) is an American diplomat , university professor and business manager who was the United States Permanent Representative to the United Nations between 1979 and 1981 .

Life

Studies, diplomat and permanent representative at the UN

After attending school, McHenry began studying at Illinois State University (ISU), from which he graduated in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.). A subsequent postgraduate study at the Southern Illinois University Carbondale he finished in 1959 with a Master of Science (M.Sc.). He then worked at Georgetown University between 1959 and 1953 , before joining the diplomatic service of the US State Department in 1963. In 1971 he became a Guest Scholar at the Washington, DC- based think tank Brookings Institution .

In 1977 he became US Deputy Representative to the United Nations Security Council . After Andrew Young had to resign as Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations in 1979 because of a secret meeting with PLO representative Zehdi Terzi , McHenry was appointed as Young's successor by US President Jimmy Carter on September 23, 1979 . He remained in this post as ambassador to the UN with cabinet rank until the end of Carter's tenure on January 20, 1981 and was then replaced on February 4, 1981 by Jeane Kirkpatrick .

Business manager and university professor

After retiring from the diplomatic service, McHenry switched to the private sector and was a board member of The Coca-Cola Company since 1981 and, between 1981 and 1982, of International Paper , the world's largest packaging manufacturer, and also a board member of the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline from 2000 to 2004 . He was also a member of the board of directors of the telecommunications company AT&T and of the Fleet Boston credit institute .

McHenry was Professor of Practical Diplomacy at Georgetown University and Fellow of International Affairs for the Council on Foreign Relations and Chairman of the Ford Foundation's International Scholarship Fund . He also continued to be involved in political issues, especially foreign policy, in various institutions and organizations such as the American Academy of Diplomacy , the Institute for International Economics and as a member of the advisory board of the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs . He is also a member of the editorial board of the journal Foreign Policy .

In addition, McHenry trustee was of Mount Holyoke College , Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences of the Trust Board of the 1950 (since 1992), member of Dwight D. Eisenhower founded American Assembly , member of the Ditchley Foundation and a member of the advisory board of the of Warren Rudman founded Organization Partnership for a Secure America .

McHenry is affiliated with the Democratic Party and supported Barack Obama in the 2012 presidential election in the United States .
