Martini Brewery (2017)

The Martini Brewery in Kassel was a brewery that had existed since 1859; it was one of the larger regional brands in Northern Hesse . From 1997 Martini was a subsidiary of Einbecker Brauhaus AG . It was closed in 2015.

history

In 1859, Adolf Kropf, who was born in Bavaria, opened the “Bavarian Beer Hall” in Kassel, where the first Martini Brew was served. The first branch of the brewery was located next to the Martinskirche , the pair of towers it still bears in the company coat of arms. The beer differed from the other regional beers in its dark color and strong original wort.

After the brewery's capacity limit of 24,000 hectoliters annual output was exceeded several times, the founder Adolf Kropf switched from the small operation on Martinsplatz to a spacious rocky property on Kölnische Strasse in 1895.

The brewery was almost completely destroyed by bomb damage and fire during World War II. The "Bavarian Beer Hall" was also destroyed. With a lot of effort, the Kropf family and employees were able to rebuild the brewery from their own resources and maintain it as a private company.

In 1970 the private brewery became a member of the Vitamalz association together with other beverage manufacturers, the members of which undertake to brew Vitamalz using a uniform recipe.

In 1992 the Martini brewery was sold to Henninger Bräu AG in Frankfurt. In October 1997, Einbecker Brauhaus AG took over Martini Brauerei GmbH under the premise of maintaining and expanding the brewery in Kassel, as well as brewing high quality beer and developing beer specialties under the “Martini” brand. To meet these goals, five million euros were invested in the technical equipment of the brewery in 1998 and 1999.

In the years after the takeover by the Einbecker Brauhaus, a wheat beer, a shandy and the Kasseler Premium Pils were launched on the market. In 2002, Martini wheat beer was awarded gold in the Southern German brewing wheat beer category at the World Beer Cup .

The Martini brewery employed around 20 people. In 2002, with a beer output of 120,000 hectoliters, sales of 10 million euros were achieved.

closure

In 2015 all production processes were relocated to Einbeck and the brewery was closed.

future

The demolition work began in the summer of 2017. Except for the brewhouse and the administration building, the brewery will be completely demolished. The plan is to develop the site with around 150 apartments.

Since then, a new city quarter has been built on the site under the name "Martini-Quartier", which is to offer not only apartments, but also offices, commercial space, restaurants, a daycare center and living space for students and people with disabilities.
