Rafael Da Costa Capote (born October 5, 1987 in Havana , Cuba ) is a handball player who first represented Cuba and then Qatar internationally .

Career

The 1.98 large left back player played in the 2008/09 season for the Italian club AS Pallamano Conversano , with whom he also took part in the EHF Cup . He then ran for two years in the Spanish ASOBAL league for BM Cuenca . The European Cup participant CB Ciudad de Logroño noticed him and signed him. In the following seasons he took part in the EHF Europe Cup and the EHF Champions League . In 2014 he was runner-up in Spain. Since summer 2014 he has been running for the Qatari club al-Jaish .

Capote took part with the Cuban national handball team at the 2007 Pan American Games in Brazil . During the games he fled and went into hiding. After the Games, he applied for asylum and was granted refugee status, with which he could have applied for Brazilian citizenship after six years. According to his own statements, he fled abroad because of better career opportunities. The following year he moved to Italy.

In the run-up to the 2015 World Cup in Qatar, it was naturalized by the host country. He took part in the tournament alongside numerous international players such as Danijel Šarić with the Qatari selection and, after winning over Austria in the round of 16, Germany in the quarter-finals and Poland in the semi-finals, reached the final, which was lost to France. Capote had previously participated in the 2014 Asian Games , where he and his team won the gold medal. In 2016 he won the Asian Cup with Qatar . He also took part with Qatar in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and in the 2017 World Cup in France .
