Peter Gerfen (born October 2, 1969 in Minden ) is a handball trainer and former handball player .

Life

Peter “Gun” Gerfen, as he was called because of his goal danger, was considered a fast and tricky player in the German handball Bundesliga in the mid-1990s. In the 1993/94 season Gerfen was the top scorer in the handball Bundesliga with 224 goals . He was successful at international club level with VfL Hameln . In the 1995/96 season he reached the final of the Euro City Cup with his team , in which they were defeated by the Norwegian team Drammen HK . In 1994 and 1995 Gerfen was appointed to the national handball team, for which he played three international matches during this time .

After his professional career was over, Gerfen played in the third and fourth leagues in Germany for a few more years. In the 2008/09 season Gerfen was the top scorer in the fourth division at the age of 40.

In 2010 Gerfen was the first professional handball player to make public that he had suffered from burnout syndrome , depression and anxiety at the age of 27 . His career as a top athlete came to an end.
