Mike Maloy

Michael Alvin "Mike" Maloy (born May 10, 1949 in New York City , † February 3, 2009 in Vienna ) was an Austrian - American basketball player.

Maloy attended Bryant High School in Long Island City, New York, and Davidson College . There he was traded as one of the best players in the NCAA and one of the greatest basketball talents. In December 1968, his portrait even appeared on the cover of the prestigious Sports Illustrated magazine . He set the NCAA record for the highest percentage of free throws in a game (13 of 13). In the 1970 NBA draft he was selected in the 10th round by the Boston Celtics , but moved to the ABA . There he was active for two years for the Virginia Squires and one year for the Dallas Chaparrals . In 1976 he moved to Austria. There he was one of the first US American legionnaires and played for the clubs UBSC Vienna, with which he became four Austrian champions, Klosterneuburg, Mattersburg and BBC-Tulln 1. His naturalization in 1980 also made it possible for him to join the Austrian national team. After his active career, Maloy appeared as a trainer and coach at various clubs (Mattersburg, Klosterneuburg, Vienna).

Maloy taught at the American International School in Vienna and a secondary school in Klosterneuburg. Maloy was also known as a blues musician, so he appeared regularly as a singer in the Boring Blues Band .

Mike Maloy was found dead on February 3, 2009 after a severe flu in his apartment in Vienna.
