Guillermo Jones (born May 5, 1972 in Colón , Panama ) is a professional boxer from Panama.

Professional career

Guillermo Jones began his professional career in 1993 in the welterweight division, the weight class up to 66.7 kg. After 21 victorious fights he lost in September 1997 to David Noel from Trinidad and Tobago by knockout in the second round, but retaliated for this defeat in a direct rematch when he defeated Noel by technical knockout in the first round. Jones then boxed on February 13, 1998 against Laurent Boudouani from France for the WBA World Light Middleweight Championship. The fight ended in a controversial draw, so that here too a direct rematch was scheduled, in which Jones on May 30, 2008 was also subject to controversial points.

As a result, Jones jumped several weight classes and boxed from 2002 mainly in the cruiser weight, the class up to 90.7 kg. On November 23, 2002, he faced WBO world champion Johnny Nelson and boxed again in a controversial draw. Against the later IBF world champion Steve Cunningham he lost just barely on points in April 2005, but in the same year defeated the two former world champions Kelvin Davis and Wayne Braithwaite each by technical knockout in round four. On September 27, 2008, Guillermo Jones defeated the reigning WBA world champion Firat Arslan in Hamburg in a one-sided duel by technical knockout in the tenth round after the referee broke off the fight because of too clear superiority.

After winning the title, he remained inactive for two years, so the WBA announced in August 2010 that it would revoke the title if he should not defend his title. Jones then went on October 2, 2010 in Panama City against the Russian Valeri Brudow and won by technical knockout in the eleventh round after the fight was canceled by the referee due to lacerations over Brudow's eyes.

In October 2012, the title was finally revoked because he had only made two defenses since winning the title in 2008 and canceled an already scheduled fight due to an alleged injury. Interim world champion Denis Lebedew was then named the new champion by the WBA. On May 17, 2013 he won against Lebedev by knockout in the eleventh round and thus received the WBA title back. On October 18, 2013, the WBA announced that traces of doping had been found in Jones' blood. Jones' victory was canceled and the title returned to Lebedev.
